Louis Stanislaus "Grandpa" Brown received the greatest of all graces, that of a happy death - on June 15, 2017, just two weeks shy of his 100th birthday. With grateful hearts, his family rejoices; for we know he will be celebrating with those awaiting his entrance into heaven.
Lou, a native Pensacolian, was one of six children born to Louis and Hazel Brown. He grew up in East Hill on La Rua Street, and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School. Summers were spent at their home on the shores of Bayou Grande. He was a graduate of Pensacola High School.
Blessed with a mechanical mind, the spirit of entrepreneurship, and the ability to solve problems, Lou ventured out into the world. He began his lifelong journey with aviation and engineering at Sikorsky Aircraft. His career path continued with opportunities at Fairchild, Northrop, Curtiss-Wright, and Vultee.
While employed in California-he met and married Thelma Herbranson. With his bride, he returned to Pensacola. He worked as a civil servant at NAS Pensacola, retiring after 30 years of loyal service. Lou continued to work, invent, and initiate business ventures well into his 90's. His work ethic and determined mindset was impressed upon all who knew him.
As a longtime parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lou was an instrumental member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and involved with the Knights of Columbus. He was a man of unwavering faith and devotion. Humble, simple, and wise-he gave endlessly of himself, striving always to do God's work.
Thelma, their beloved children - Louis (Bo), Karen, James (Jimbo), and his sisters - Marjorie, Mary, and Hazel preceded Lou in death.
Lou is survived by his children, Michael, Kristine and husband John, Patrick and wife Carolyn, Thomas and wife Karen; 21 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; his brother James, and sister Nancy. Grandpa's greatest strength was his enduring dedication to family. His loss will be forever felt by those he leaves behind.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 23, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, with a recitation of The Holy Rosary at 7:00 pm, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 303 S. Navy Blvd.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am, Saturday, June 24, 2017 at St. John's with the Rev. Msgr. James Flaherty, celebrant. Burial will follow at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Old Corry Field Rd.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist School, 325 S. Navy Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32507 or The Alpha Center, 6004 Pernella Rd., Pensacola, FL 32504.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
